Fire Extinguisher Puts the Brakes on Jet Fire

"It's fairly uncommon for brakes to get on fire," according to Southwest Airlines spokes person;  Given the miles we fly each year, this is a good thing.  Another good thing is the fire extinguisher was ready and worked.

A Sunday Southwest Airlines flight from Austin to Midland landed safely after overheating caused the brakes to catch fire, an airline spokeswoman said.

Flight 500 hit the tarmac at Midland International Airport at 4:15 p.m. About 10 minutes later, a ramp agent noticed the brakes were ablaze and put the flames out with a fire extinguisher, spokeswoman Edna Ruano said.

The 122 passengers and five crew members aboard were not injured, Ruano said.
